Vernard Lee Songer, a man whose impact on our lives can’t be measured in mere words. But today on his birthday, I would like to remember him, and do my best, to honor him through the words I share, for words are the tools we have to remember, to grieve, and to love.

Vernard was more than just a father to me. He was a steadfast presence in my life, a pillar of strength and reliability that never wavered. I have countless memories of his unwavering dedication to our family, but there are two instances that I want to share with you today. Both involved my old Ford Ranger, my youthful folly, and a father’s undying commitment.

The first, a rainy day, a slippery turn too sharp, a truck spun out, a rim cracked. With nerves on edge, I dialed my father’s number. He was there within 20 minutes, bringing with him not just a spare tire, but the reassurance and calm I desperately needed. The second incident, stranded in the middle of nowhere, my truck’s engine ablaze. Once more, I called my father. Despite the distance and the danger, he was by my side within 30 minutes, extinguishing not only the fire in the engine but the panic in my heart.

But Vernard’s triumphs were not just in responding to emergency phone calls. His real victories were more personal and challenging. He battled the demons of addiction and emerged victorious, overcoming alcohol and nicotine, and in doing so, taught us all a profound lesson in resilience and personal strength.

Vernard’s passions were simple, yet meaningful. He loved spending time with family, using his hands to create and fix, and found joy in the thrill of motocross. He lived his life fully and passionately, imparting lessons both in words and by his example. He taught us the value of change and the importance of caring for everyone equally.

The essence of Vernard, his caring nature, his readiness to help, his passionate approach to life, had a profound impact not only on me but also on everyone he encountered. The lessons he taught me about work ethic and personal responsibility have shaped me into the person I am today.

Perhaps the most unique quality Vernard possessed, the one that we should all hold on to and remember, was his unwavering availability. Regardless of what was happening in his own world, he was always ready to be there for you, to lend a hand, a word of advice, or simply his presence.

Vernard Lee Songer was more than a father; he was a friend, a loving father, and husband. In our hearts, Vernard lives on, forever there, just like he always was, reminding us that love never fades, and that those who touch our lives, remain a part of us forever.
